Dear Rachel. In response to your lecturer's dilemma..
Is it possible to arrange for paper modification via a support agency
funded by the dsa? The person doing the explaining currently may not
feel confident in knowing what it is appropriate to explain and what
it is not, hence a possible conflict of interests!
Modification of the language by a hearing support agency would
perhaps overcome this problem, but they would need the paper in
advance.
<Rachel,
< There is a second year ESEA (Environmental Science Degree) student, X,
<who is deaf (profoundly and pre-lingually deaf actually) and apparently
<needs to have words in exam questions explained to him just
<prior to the exam. One member of staff here, had to do this and
<felt that he was explaining technical words that other students were being
<expected to have understood from the lectures. We feel that we do not
<extend such help to, for example, non native English speaking students who
<have, in principle, just as much need to have such treatment.
All the best
