Roger,
I recall from previous casework that an outgoing student going to an EU
destination was able to get a certificate similar to an E111 that we can
take on holiday, [I think that it may have been an E123] which covers
presxisting conditions. Full local cover was given for
ongoing medical treatments. This might mean that the drugs would be
provided free. Check this out with the NHS Executive, at Department of
Health on 0171 972 2000, ask for the Policy Unit.

We have a second - year
student going to Spain to do an intercalary year. Many years ago
he had a liver transplant and, as a result, will need to take a
particular drug on a daily basis for the rest of his life. In the UK
this medication is available to him free of charge on the NHS as
a full-time student. In Spain, however, he will have to pay for the
drug. ( It will not be possible to take a year's supply with him.)
I wonder whether - since his stay abroad is a requirement of his
degree programme - his LEA might be expected to bear the cost.
(So far as I am aware he is not in receipt of a DSA : would he be
eligible ??)
All thoughts gratefully received
