I agree with much/most of what you write.
However, I think that the main problem is the very serious degree of
ignorance/uncertainty that currently exists.
For example, if we could somehow be pretty certain that Covid-19 was
never going to result in more global deaths than there are, say, road
deaths in the US (albeit that a pretty shocking figure, apparently in
excess of 30k per year), then I suspect that 'we' (at least, many
people) might be thinking very differently about the virus. However,
as things are, we cannot be certain that the situation would not be
far worse than that if we did little/nothing in relation to the virus.
