Absolutely Sheenagh. As you point out, the 50% is not for being deaf but is to remove the barriers around working in a second language or around the impact that deafness has on language development. Thus the time allowed should not be fixed but should be determined by the linguistic abilities of the student in relation to the type of exam.

Hi Claire,
How long was that piece of string again?
The length of time will depend on the questions – ie long complex culturally-specific questions (possibly with short Yes/no or multiple choice answers), or short and sweet questions in plain language (where the assessor expects most of the 20 minutes to be spend composing and writing the answers)? Will the interpreter have had time in advance to prepare a considered and clear interpretation/translation?
My guess if the string is about 50% longer, it would cover most situations. (But if the test time is set in order for all students to complete the test without rushing, and the interpreter can also work on interpretation of answers, probably maybe more…?)

Hi,
If the student is a BSL-user then isn’t she already having additional time for this exam (25%-50%) which might compensate?

Subject: BSL interpreting - exams
Hi Everyone,
I have a student who uses BSL interpreters with her in class. She will also require a BSL interpreter to interpret the questions. She has a class test coming up which takes 20 minutes - I am wondering how much extra time to allocate to allow time for the interpreter to interpret the questions. Any suggestions??
