Although you are individually assessed for your own wheelchair, when you need one just for those occasions when you may be asked for a short term loan, ie student broken her foot who cant walk round campus so borrows one for short term to be pushed round by her friends, visitors to the University who it is easier to borrow one on Open day, for use at graduation for students who are slow at walking if they would prefer to be pushed along the stage etc we at Liverpool Hope have 2 wheelchairs for such use. One is a self propelling wheelchair and one is a manual wheelchair ( pushed by others). If you had one of each you would cover most eventualities, you will never be able to cope with people of all shapes and sizes but they should be suitable for the short term use.
If someone needs one long term they should be going through their GP and getting assessed for one properly. None of our wheelchairs would be allowed to be used off campus as we would never get them back.
I am an OT and as long as you go to a reputable company and buy one of each you will be fine for most needs. When you see them all at places like Alton Towers etc waiting to be borrowed they are just bought off the shelf.
Hope that helps
Sheila

Agree with below, anyone using a wheelchair has usually had a wheelchair
assessment to identify width of seat, back support, height of arms, and
height of chair. Any concurrent medical conditions/symptoms may be
exacerbated if not properly assessed. A wheel chair assessment is
usually done by an OT/Physio via GP referral to Wheelchair Services.

Possibly check with the students concerned if at all possible? Whilst
there are 'standard' specs, they may not be suitable for all applicants'
needs/dimensions/methods of propulsion.

Dear all
We have a number physically disabled student applicants who use
wheelchairs to some (lesser) extent, and who all have been offered a
place from September. I've been asked to asked to obtain a spec for a
manual wheelchair, so one can be bought and made available at reception.
Have found various suppliers online, but would appreciate colleagues
advice on anything I need to bear in mind before going ahead?
Kind regards
Michelle
