Subject: [data-protection] 192.com - "The NEW 2006 Electoral Roll is now
LIVE"
I think that there have been recent postings from such databases but I have
just had an email from "Newsletter 192.com"
"The NEW 2006 Electoral Roll is now LIVE
And it is packed with over 29 million new and updated names
and addresses, making your people search easier!"
with the following suggestions of what you might do with the information:
" . Find long-lost friends and family
. Search for people not listed in the phone book
. Search by name only - no location required
. Search 'by relationship' - e.g. find a John Smith living with a Mary
Jones"
I used to be involved in local politics and I recall that a copy of the
electoral register was given to each of the political parties - for
canvassing etc.
Likewise I know that a copy is placed in local libraries.
I presume that this is the full electoral register without people excluded
who have requested their names to be so.
I assume that it is only the copy of the electoral register which is
available for sale which has names excluded where people request it.
When I started working for the Greater London Council in 1979 my first job
was to find out which London boroughs used the computer to produce their
electoral register (seems like the Dark Ages now).
I do recall actually obtaining an electoral register on tape from a London
borough but I don't recall doing anything with it. I worked in the Research
and Intelligence Unit and it would have been useful to know where London
boroughs were placed in producing their registers.
Prior to that I worked in market research, and my job was to decide on the
sample of constituencies to be used for our polling. I would decide on which
registers would be purchased by our field controllers - this was my biggest
single task during the two years that I worked there. There were a very few
boroughs which refused to sell their registers commercially, and our
samplers would go along to St Catherine's House (OPCS) to copy out the names
or addresses to be sampled.
