While I do not disagree, this is the way JISCMail works. If we want to get
full benefit from the JISCMail service then a minor investment needs to be
made in obtaining the password.
Unless you have a better suggestion, of course, which I think we'd be
grateful for. The JISCMail helpline takes requests for enhancements of
their services.

A few hours on an IT helpdesk will show that "needing a password you didn't
even know you had" is more than enough for many users to describe the
situation as insurmountable - quite irrespective of any mechanism to recover
a password.
