If state of health is that important for obtaining a role then the authority
for a full medical examination should be sought by the employer. Records
while a student are not relevant.
As for mental health problems, while these seem perfectly reasonable in
terms of "those with nothing to hide have nothing to fear" it has been
estimated that almost every adult in this country will at one time in their
lives have suffered form and been treated for depression
Not that many years ago the producing of an illegitimate baby was cause for
lifetime incarceration in a mental hospital. Only for the mother, you
notice.
In the 1950s homosexuality was a mental health issue.
I think the list of "ex mental health issues" and "trivial mental health
issues" is endless.
If you pass the course then you pass the course.
If your employer required medical history then that is available as a
totally different issue and should not be sought from the teaching body.
And a reference is a reference. Give it or withhold it, but recognise that
it is only confidential at one end of the process.
We will never eliminate total nutbars. But it was the employer that had the
duty of care to the patients, not the establishment who taught her.
Again, "Why did she pass?" Or can anyone get a nursing qualification
nowadays? It used to be quite a tough course.

Just out of interest, what sort of reason for absence would be detrimental
to patients' well-being?

The only way round this is to include a reference to this on initial
enrolment forms stating that you may disclose periods of absence to
prospective emloyers. I would not be happy about releasing actual reason
for illness unless it was for reasons which would be detrimental to
patients' well-being.
