I would say that technically "Aloysius Livingstone Beauchamp-Cholmondely,
University of Nether Wallop" is likely to identify a unique (living?)
individual, but "John Smith" at the same university is not, for there are
several like him. Therein lies your dilemma.
The pages may be open to search engine inclusion.
I am looking not at lawfulness, but at likelihood of complaint and
investigation. A L B-C may be very shy about his university career. He may
not want anyone to know he even passed his A Levels ('Nice but Dim'?), and
he may throw his toys out of his pram.
My view is that the list needs technical safeguards and should not be public
domain. I am being pedantic, of course.

Subject: [data-protection] Lost alumni
Can anyone advise on our 'Lost Alumni' dilemma outlined below please?
We have some 8,000 -10,000 Alumni (former students) with whom we have lost
touch and would like to get back in contact with.
Whilst some UK Universities have no 'Lost Alumni' section on their Alumni
websites, many others do, and these generally feature a list of either:
a) Grad Year - Full Name (inc Maiden Name if known) - Course OR
b) Grad Year - Full Name (inc Maiden Name) but not the course And most of
these are accessible via a general area, as opposed to via a password
protected part of their website.
This has been debated on the development/alumni officers development forum
with some arguing that name only (no course or grad year) is the only
acceptable option whilst at the other end of the scale, others say that
unless you are uniquely identifying a living individual then there is
nothing wrong with saying we have 'missing' people, and that publishing the
name of someone, including their grad year and subject does not usually
uniquely identify someone.
For those Universities who have taken either option a) or b) route above
they say that having a 'Lost Alumni' list on their website or publishing it
in their magazine has helped to locate a proportion of missing alumni.
Our alumni officer would like to pursue this but I would like to have
clarification of the position from other DP officers/experts.
Thanks in anticipation.
