In my opinion, we should withdraw all criticisms we made of so-called police
states and oppressive regimes. The UK is doing exactly the same things for
which other countries were lambasted. The assault on basic legal rights in
force for hundreds of years is nauseating.
Incidentally, there is still a right to silence but juries (or more likely
judges) can "infer" guilt from your silence. If I ever got into a situation
where my rights were read to me (you have the right to remain silent but . . . .
etc) I would have to say when asked that no, I don't understand. How can me
saying nothing actually harm my defence? It cannot. It may influence the
judge into pronouncing me guilty in the absence of evidence of my innocence - but
surely that would be against all known legal tenets, wouldn't it? ;-)
The new anti-terrorism laws being debated will be introduced even in the face
of criticism and opposition, further eroding legal rights. Guilty until
proven innocent, no right to a fair trial judged by your peers, no right of
appeal. No wonder some of us are leaving the country!
