Should we not therefore be asking the IC to publish any
amendments/statutory instruments etc.on his website?

Subject: Re: Data Protection Act
Hi Caroline
There is a need to be careful here. Acts don't get amended in the sense
that the original text of the Act, published by HMSO, is ever amended.
Instead the changes are contained in subsequent amending legislation
(primary or secondary). To get a single working document you have to
apply the subsequent changes to your own copy of the original Act.
Doubtless there are legal publication services which will do this for
you but I guess that you might not like the subscription cost.
A very good example is the Data Protection Act. This has been "amended"
substantially, especially for public bodies, by the FOIA (as well, I am
sure, by other subsequent legislation). So actually knowing what the
effective legislation now is can be a non-trivial task.
A minor point about the text of the original FOIA. Certainly the HMSO
(now branded as OPSI) website has the act but it is paginated into
multiple pages and is a pain to navigate. The Campaign for Freedom of
Information have (with the agreement of HMSO) produced one document of
the original Act in either RTF or PDF format. Really convenient.
Available at http://www.cfoi.org.uk/opengov.html#labour. Note: This is
the original FOIA and you still have to check the procedure in my first
para. if you want to incorporate all subsequent amendments.
Regards
Jim Whitaker

Subject: Re: [data-protection] Data Protection Act
Caroline,
Go to http://www.opsi.gov.uk/ and do a search for "data protection act"
you will see the Act as published by the Government and also it should
pull up any amendments that have been published separately. It is my
understanding that once an Act is published it is not directly amended
unless the Act is reintroduced, but annexes and amendments are published
as extra documents - I am willing to stand corrected on this however.
Hope this helps.
Simon Howarth.

Hi,
Does anyone know whether the Data Protection Act on the information
commissioners website is the most recent version? If there is a more
recent version do you know where I can access it on-line?
Thanks
Caroline
