While you are right that this one instance is "one email", had the sender
been interested in what they sent then they would have replied to the
messages sent to them over each prior email. This list has *never* been a
list for anything other than very restricted marketing. The email was one
of a series of admittedly well spaced, but totally badly targeted messages
about this undoubtedly fine commercial event
It must have been about four years ago that there was a discussion about
emails of this nature (shorter ones, better ones) and the conclusion was
unanimously that "If the sender is a contributor to the list (this sender
contributes precisely nothing except adverts) then a simple, single, short,
well phrased email (this was none of those) was allowable in order to
advertise a relevant event.
In order to make sure that such good emails remain allowed those that do not
match those criteria must be policed. Regrettably such policing causes
aggravation to other good list citizens. But it also heartily discourages
the rest.
The email has brought up points worthy of discussion as well as matters of
aggravation. See Chris Lewis's email on the topic, just prior to my reply.
Is JISCMail the Data Controller here or the Data Processor? Does it matter
that the sender sends it to a list "sight unseen" when they control the use
of the list to send the mail and JISCMail only controls the membership of
the list?

At the end of the day - it was one e-mail - if you are interested you will
look at it, if not - there's a wee button on your keyboard which says
"delete". Instead, we have ended up with so many "unwanted" e-mails
complaining about it - is this really relevant to the list?
