CNN had a rather different spin:
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- An incident in which U.S. officials
refused to allow a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines 747 to fly over
the United States has brought to light a potential hole in
the nation's homeland security safety net.
Which reflects the view of most Americans posting comments about
this incident, which are along the lines of "why should we allow
known terrorists to hijack a plane and crash it into New York,
simply because it doesn't have a scheduled stop in the US".
CNN goes on to say:
U.S. officials said Mexico provided the names after
accessing the KLM list and comparing it with a list of
suspected terrorists. Such sharing of information is allowed
under U.S.-Mexican security agreements, they said.
Which is relevant to the Data Protection debate. Presumably it's OK
for KLM to send the names to Mexico if the flight is bound for
there?
ps. It's not clear to me from any of the reporting, why it was
"impossible" to land and refuel in Canada, then continue outside US
airspace (out to sea over the east coast, presumably). But European
airlines do seem to have a track record for returning to base when
such incidents occur, rather than busking it. Perhaps they thought
the Canadians would spend ages re-screening the passengers, and
leave them with a problem over what to do with the two Saudis.
