Especially since US Acts have odd names like "Sawbones-Oxley" and
Gramm-Leach-doodah"
This one was a cynical manipulation of the legislative assemblies.
"un-American acts" come to mind, though those actually seem to happen more
in Arkansas. No, I'm thinking of something else.
......and here comes the deluge of auto replies again from those who were
not polite enough to turn the thing of while they were away. One has a
flying apostrophe in it, too!

I don't complain about use of an acronym, I'm quite happy with RIPA, DPA,
FOIA, HRA, ATCSA, and so on. I'm not overly bothered about remembering what
they stand for - I'm more concerned with what they say.
In the USA PATRIOT Act case, which came first, the acronym or its expansion?
Is anyone likely to remember the rather cumbersome phrase it represents
(amusing referred to as the "Short title").
It seems to me, as Tim hinted, that the acronym was specifically selected in
order to invoke images of patriotism (and to hint to those who may not
support it that they are perhaps not patriotic); and that the meaning of the
acronym was then shoe-horned into it. That may not be accurate, but my
perception, as an outsider, is that its farcical, and even almost
fantastical - I wouldn't have expected it from a trashy novel.
Clearly a holiday Friday.
Jethro.
