Dear all,
We have a customer in hospital at the moment and apparently unable to sign
a letter of authority for anyone to deal with his affairs. His mother has
phoned requesting policy information on behalf of him. The question that
has been asked of me is can we provide anything to the mother?
My initial concerns were how we verify that she is actually his mother.
Next concern was how we can establish that she is actually entitled to
receive any information about her son (would the son want his mother
involved in his affairs?). I had initially suggested that the mother
obtain Power of Attorney / Court of Protection type documents but she has
said she can't afford to go down that route. We have a letter from the
hospital confirming that the customer is with them. Do you think it would
be acceptable to send the requested information, marked private &
confidential, to the hospital for the customer's attention or are the risks
of interception (by hospital staff / mother) too high? Are there other
inexpensive routes that the mother can go down to establish herself as her
son's representative?
Thanks in advance.
Emma
