Either obtain X's permission, (bearing in mind they may themselves have a
solicitor acting for them, whom they may wish to answer on their behalf), or
refuse and await the court order.

Only try! It would seem the solicitors themselves do not have a very high
expectation of success. Perhaps they consider the study content may be
irrelevant to considerations of legal proceedings, but could find it
interesting anyway, in which case this is no more than an unpleasant way of
exerting pressure to facilitate a fishing expedition. Also if the requesting
solicitor is sufficiently aware of DPA matters, consideration of S.55 issues
could be interesting. But then that would not be nice either.
