Ah, nostalgia! When I worked in Libraries ( academic libraries, a few years ago, pre- DPA 1998, I would add) users could reserve items themselves via the circo system, or manually via staff at issue or information desks.
We then placed all reserved items on a shelf behind the main issue desk with a slip of paper inserted into each item, showing only the reserving user's Library barcode number.
Users presented their cards, we checked off the barcode number, and then issued the item. Names or users were not displayed, principally to prevent fellow students/academics finding out who was reserving the book and hassling/impersonating them- in my experience, reserved items were usually one of only two or so copies purchased by departments to serve a course cohort of zillions!
I am sure its totally different these days:-)

I am investigating data protection issues relating to the collection of
reservations by customers in self service library systems. In your library
do you cover the book or item so that customers cannot see titles or
details of other peoples reservations or do you leave the item in full view
so that anyone can see what has been reserved & by whom.
Whichever way you have decided to deal with this issue I would welcome
feedback on why the decision was made.
