Peter,
in practice you are not going to get the tracing companies to erase their info because you wont know which one they used. When you tell your colleagues to tick the opt out box when registering for the electoral roll do you tell them that it will probably mean that it will be more difficult to obtain credit, because the granting company wont be able to verify their residence by means of the electoral roll. Do you advise them to go ex-directory, not become a committee member of the management company that looks after their block of flats. etc etc
Wouldnt it be easier to ascertain what condition in schedule 2 the student satisfied in order to process this data. If he cant justify it then take the appropriate steps.

Subject: People finding services
Some of our staff (FE college) have reported their home addresses being
traced by students using people finding services on the web that use
electoral registration details. I have advised them to tick the opt out
box on the electoral registration forms in future and for the current
register to write to the local electoral registration office to state
their wish to opt out. However I don't know if they can do anything
about the information already purchased by the people finding company.
If the company was contacted with evidence that they had retrospectively
opted out would the company then have to remove their entry?
