Is this an example of the "I can't be bothered so I'll use DP as an excuse"
syndrome?
And also (apologies for a digression), it's more paranoia. There is a
stretch of road next to my house on which the kids play football. There is a
field behind my house ideal for football, but parents don't like their
infants put at risk from strangers by playing there. The fact that one of
these kids is in genuine risk of being killed by a passing car seems to pale
into insignificance beside the perceived, and less likely threat of a
predatory stranger happening to be around. In the case quoted, it's
seemingly more important for a kid to stay lost (and be at some risk), than
for the store to run the risk of alerting a passing psycho to the existence
of a lost child. If there was anyone intending to kidnap a child, they're
more likely to be looking for lost kids than listening out for the tannoy.
