This was discussed a while ago on the list (2-3 years back), please check the
archives.
From memory, Charles Oppenheim (Loughborough) took the view it was OK and
the general consensus was that it was OK (subject to X Y Z parameters).
I took the view (still stand by it) that depending on the subject matter a student can
be expressing personal views in an essay ... which can be sensitive data (eg. on
race religion etc) hence you would need to have approval.
The problem is what happens if a student does not give you permission? Do you
treat them differently? Do you make the whole thing part of the rules and
regulations of the university ... which means it may apply to the intake for 2006/07
(even for that prospectuses may already be printed).
Look for the old discussion first :-)
