Our University's policy is to withhold, from student debtors:-
a) further teaching
b) module results (except for failed results to allow reassessment[s])
c) award[s].
until they have fully cleared their debts.
Whilst I can happily accept a) and c) I personally feel that b) is
rather anti productive since it would cause far more cost and
aggravation to the University if the student made a SAR, which would
presumably give them all the (previously withheld) usual info and a lot
more.
In my personal view it also cannot possibly be described as 'best
practice' as far as data protection goes, and is also against the spirit
(if not within the scope ) of FOI legislation.
QUESTIONS
Would the group like to share with me / us all thoughts on
i) what the practice elsewhere is on sending/witholding results (in full
or part) to student debtors?
ii) whether such a policy is advisable (past - present - future)
iii) is there specific published advice on this issue?
given that it seems that the trend will be for students to become more
litigious, especially when larger sums of their own (or parent's) money
will be sunk into their fees.
Thanks, BoB Waixel.
PS Could very late Thursday be deemed to be Friday for DP List purposes?
