No let them start the course, get into all sorts of problems, be referred, have to resit a
year without any funding.....
Can you imagine how long the whole process would take if students had to collect primary
sources of evidence that their 'disability had a significant effect on their study' as
well as medical evidence as well as an assessment of need? What would be classed as
significant? What not? Sounds like a lot more work and a good deal of hassle for everyone
involved, particularly the student and the LEA officers.
'Dear LEA officer, Jennie is no longer on the course because she failed all her first
year exams, is there any chance she could have some money now to obtain some support.'
Surely there are betters ways of improving the system?
Mike
PS This isn't a leak from the DfES review is it? (Only joking ;-) )

Ergo an assessment of need

So under the present system we provide support based on the off chance
that a student will experience similar difficulties to those previously
experienced by a student with a similar disability on a similar course
when it entirely possible that the student will not, in fact, experience
any such difficulties?

A student (and an LEA)has little conception of the amout or depth of
study requered untill they are on the course so how can they prove that
their disability will NOT have an addvers effect on their ability to
study!!
Sorry can't find the spell checker in this email package
