Dear All
Forgive me for saying this but I often think reading the submissions on
this list that there is a slight danger of us DP souls getting bogged down
by our desire to champion the DPA like some kind of caped crusaders.
The DP Act is definitely a valuable protection for the individual from
abuses in the handling of their personal data but on the other hand I think
the championing of this law and the rights of the individual must sometimes
(and this can be often in public service) be balanced against the interests
of the community or society at large.
I think it is often positive and productive to seek a compromise whereby
whilst we respect the Law we work at preventing it being a barrier to
legitimate activities which are to be undertaken on behalf of the whole
community. We should look at the wider picture rather than bleating on
quite so much about civil liberties issues as if we are the front line of
Britain's defence rather than the "dad's army" which I suspect we resemble
rather more.
That's better - needed to get that off my chest
Hope noone is offended
