We seem to have a dichotomy, what is the point of having a
'confidential' register if any member of the public can walk in and
inspect the full register and extract any number of names and addresses.
This seems to contravene the DP Act as regards disclosure.
I too have the same internal questions to answer.
I would assume that the Data Subject can check their own entry but no
other but is this then a contravention of the Representation of the
Peoples Regs?

Subject: Disclosing the electoral register
The electoral register is now divided into two different registers, one
which can be disclosed and one which cannot. If a person rings up asking
a
member of staff to look up an address on the available one is it lawful
under the Act to tell the person over the phone who is registered there
or
should they be asked to come in and view for themselves ?
Are there any special rules governing historical electoral registers or
are
these readily available as a public document ?
