I have been told of an institution where students join at registration with
the institution but the institution refuses to divulge any information to
the SU. Not only would Tony's point appear to have force but I find it hard
to see how it can be fair processing for the institution to record
information about union membership unless it is explicit (a) that it won't
be passed on and (b) why in that case it is being recorded. If the
University does not want to record anything about SU (Union Society)
membership, it would seem the SU needs a completely separate channel for
recruiting members and getting data to identify them. If that's the case,
the HEI runs the risk that the SU will have members that the HEI doesn't
believe to be students (leaving aside Life Members etc) but it won't know -
doesn't that raise some potential disadvantages for the HEI?
