We arranged support for a visually impaired social work student on work
placement a couple of years ago. The course leader helped us recruit
another student, who had already been police checked for the course. The
cost was paid through the student's DSA. Clear guidelines on the role and
responsibilities were agreed, but I do not have a copy.

Subject: Support worker for a visually impaired trainee teacher
Dear all,
I was wondering if any of you have experience, advice or guide-lines for
the provision of a support worker to accompany a visually impaired
student on school experience? The student managed her first year
placement but feels that she needs support for the coming experience.
I have been in contact with RNIB and the person I need to speak to is
on holiday but will respond on her return.
I am hoping that the costs will be provided through the DSA (the person
who did the student's initial needs assessment has retired so I am
unable to follow that path).
The Head of Education has indicated that the person who is employed
as a support worker will need to be 'police checked'.
I am keen to know what other HEIs have done in these situations.
Any advice would be welcome. Guide-linesGuide-lines, rates, ???
The school experience is after Easter so I need to act on this quickly.
Many thanks
Pat
