Gail,
I agree with you. I was staggered recently to get a letter from school
asking for consent for my daughter to take part in an event (no problem) and
saying that it was a condition of participation that photographs and video
be taken to form part of a report on the project which would also go on the
web (overseas transfer).
I didn't think that my consent was being 'freely given' in the
circumstances, and told them so in no uncertain terms. However, I didn't
withhold it, because I didn't want to embarrass or disadvantage my daughter.
Also, the form only came two days before the event (which had been planned
for months), leaving no time to raise any queries.
If the consensus is that parental consent is required, I would be grateful,
as I can use that with the school and LEA.
Obviously, where the photograph/video is an integral part of the course or
event, the considerations would be slightly different.
