This is pretty much what I assumed too - surely the signage only has to
warn that people are entering an area covered by CCTV and can potentially
be picked up on camera? I can't see any need to have a sign beside every
camera.
Just to worry everyone a bit more - recently read the ACPO Media Advisory
Group guidelines to Chief Constables in England, Wales & N Ireland.
Quote - "Material which features individuals whose identity is unknown to
the police is not currently regarded as 'personal data' under the Act. Once
the individuals are identified, the material becomes 'personal data' and is
subject to the provisions of the Act regarding disclosure".
It goes on to talk about sale of tapes to (e.g.) TV crime shows, Police
Camera Action type shows, etc. Becoming more concerned about interpretation
of DPA regarding CCTV - potentially a problem in shared schemes where
Police / council /Health Auth / university / commercial organisations are
joint controllers.
Still awaiting a response from OIC about "domestic" use by tenants etc. but
have chased it up and will forward to all who asked ASAP.
