Training for Excellence Conference
10am * 4.30pm
21 June 2001
Hereward College of Further Education, Coventry, UK
The 'Training for Excellence' Conference is the culmination of the first
year's work of Hereward College's FEFC-funded Widening Participation
project: Widening Participation in Higher Education for Disabled
Students. This project, which commenced in earnest in July 2000, seeks
to increase the number of disabled students in higher education locally
and focuses on students with significant impairments. Particular
attention has been addressed to the issue of transition from FE to HE.
One of the issues highlighted by work on the project is the need for
high quality training to ensure that both students and their support
workers are equipped with the skills to perform at their best in the HE
environment. This is particularly
pertinent as students move into HE and, in contrast to the
centrally-organised nature of FE/school support, are required to take a
much more pro-active role in their support arrangements. Numbers of
students with significant impairments in
higher education are, as yet, very low and opportunities to share
experiences and examples of good practice can be minimal.
