Dear dis-forum,
The University holds its annual degree ceremonies off campus in the Brangwyn
Hall, a traditional beautiful building with reasonable access. One of the
people who are receiving an honorary fellowship this year is a full-time
wheelchair user. The stage, where she needs to be with the others, is only
accessible by two flights of steps backstage. At the present time, there is
no easy way to facilitate access onto the stage.
We are investigating renting a suitable lift to either get her up the front
of the stage (the type of platform lift where you go in the back and out the
front) or temporarily installing two platform lifts to conquer the flights
of steps backstage. The hope is that we will only face this rental issue for
one year, and develop a permanent solution for 2002 and beyond.
Does anyone have any ideas of suppliers or contacts who may be able to
assist us? I have already called the SURFACE research group at Salford and
All Clear Designs in London, and left messages for them to contact me.
Many thanks in advance.
Regards, Richard.
