Could anyone suggest strategies to ensure fair marking exams of dyslexic
students, when the tutor is unable to understand what the student was trying
to say in a written answer?
This difficulty most commonly arises when the student has had ongoing
learning support with their course-work, so the course team were unaware of
the extent of the student's literacy difficulties. We have provide
guidelines on how to mark for content, but this is not always sufficient.
The student may have been offered, and refused, an amanuensis.
I suggested that the student should be offered a viva. Is this appropriate,
or what other strategies would you recommend?
