Although this particular case did not result in a sacking as far as I know,
it may be the one that people are referring to:
"The complainant contacted the [Registrar's] office alleging that information
about her telephone account had been disclosed to another person by her
telecommunications provider during a telephone call to her number. The
complainant alleged that information relating to numbers dialled were
discussed with a friend who she had staying in her house. As a result of the
complaint the service provider reviewed its policy and staff training in
relation to the disclosure of information to individuals other than the named
account holder."
If I remember it correctly, details of an unpaid bill were disclosed to a
friend of the woman who picked up the phone for her because she was busy.
This is probably one of the areas that many organisations could fall foul of,
particularly where there are two or more people with the same surname at the
address.
Recently a friend of ours had her new credit card used by her brother because
when it came it just had the initial and surname (no Miss) and of course her
brother has the same initial and surname - a genuine mistake on his part as
he had applied for a credit card at the same time!!
