Paula,
As a concerned school governor I did a presentation on exactly this topic,
to the Data Protection Forum, about 6 months ago.
The fact of the matter is that, in Essex anyhow, schools are very much left
to fend for themselves.
In researching I spoke to about 6 heads of primary schools (my area of
concern) and although they were all aware that they had received some advice
regarding initial registration under the 84 Act that was about the limit of
their experience and knowledge.
Training for staff and governors is non-existent so awareness is
correspondingly low to vanishing!!
I did take the matter up with the Essex Governor Development Unit but they
were of the opinion that it was not a priority and that funding was
unavailable. I did offer initial training (at no cost) but heard nothing
more.
I hope other areas have a little more input.
Regards.
Malcolm

Subject: D.P & Schools
Know it's late on a Friday, so not looking for any immediate responses!!
anyhow, for those Local Authority people, can you advise.
Now that Schools are separate legal entities and have to register on their
own behalf re: Data protection, how are other authorities handling their
relationships with the schools, are they still providing advise on D.P
issues , training etc or are schools dealing with these direct.
Need to get a general feel, to confirm our way of working.
Many Thanks
