- Implications of the DDA Code of Practice in Higher Education

This event will focus on the practical implications of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2001 and explore the Code of Practice which accompanies the Act. The conference will equip staff in higher education with the knowledge, resources and the techniques to influence change in institutions.
Workshops sessions will offer delegates a chance to discuss issues and new developments in good practice. In the 'Supplier Showcase' session, delegates can meet and attend presentations by a range of equipment companies/services that can assist institutions comply with legislation.
The SEN and Disability Act 2001 is an amendment to the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and covers pre- and post-16 education, making discrimination against disabled students in the provision of education unlawful in 2002 in England, Wales and Scotland. The Code of Practice, written by Skill and the Disability Rights Commission, will be published in March 2002, and explains the new responsibilities and practical implications for institutions.
The conference is aimed at all those planning and providing services for disabled students, including senior managers, heads of student support services, disability officers and student union officers. Disabled students are also encouraged to attend.
