Hi Bryan
I would agree. DSA are available on PGCE and second undergraduate courses
for similar reasons. Conversion courses are particularly important for some
disabled people as you say. Another situation which has been brought to our
attention is of a student who was told at school 'You can't be a lawyer
because you are disabled'. Later, when confidence had increased the student
decided to qualify in law after all, and is going to do a conversion course.
One solution is to apply for the courses to be specifically designated, as
the Legal Practice Course and Bar Vocational Course have been already.
Skill, students and the law society asked the DfEE to designate those
courses. Institutions should contact the minister or the DfEE to ask for the
relevant conversion course to be designated, explaining why it should be.
This might be quicker than changing the regulations.
The alternative is to change the regulations so that conversion courses are
automatically designated. This could be done in amending regulations or in
the regulations for 2001.
Yours,
