I've just decided to join the list while considering answering an enquiry on another Mailbase list of which I'm co-owner.
I work for Leeds Met Students Union as an advice worker. I am also vice-chair of the UNISON branch which covers employees of both the SU and the institution. I am interested in the Data Protection aspects of the relationship between the institution and its students and that between employer and employee. Among the issues which make this list particularly relevant to me are: the past use of covert video surveillance by LMU of employees (featured in the media in the last year); the use of CCTV by both the institution and the SU in public places to watch the generality of passers-by and particularly to watch workers; the installation by the SU of an electronic timekeeping system with a view to centralising and integrating large quantities of data on employees previously kept manually (if at all); the use by the institution of data concerning students including, ostensibly, the right to withold awards on the basis of debts owed to outside bodies as well as to itself; potential problems for advice work in the 1998 Act although we would like to think that we already meet high standards in relation to key issues (confidentiality, access of clients to records not previously covered by legislation). I'm also concerned about issues to do with running a list like this one.
