just to add to the debate.........
I first came across 192.com on a CD ROM about a year ago in Hertfordshire's
Central library. There is no restriction on accessing it. I mentioned it
to the Librarian who didn't think it was an issue despite my raising the
same concerns as in Doreen's comments below. I then rang the Library
Association to ascertain their views. They suggested that to restrict
access to 192's services or not subscribe to the CD ROM version would be
unacceptable censorship!
It would be interesting to know how many local authority libraries do have
subscriptions to this CD ROM.
the problem in regulating this seems to be that the data sources that 192
draw on; Electoral Roll, telephone books etc are considered to be in the
public domain and therefore 192 could argue that they haven't breached the
Act although I do certainly agree that their activities should be better
regulated.
