Pauline,
OK, lets look at some resources. Firstly, I would very much recommend
subscribing to the Speakup Linux mailing list for VI people. Although
your query is not Linux related, there will be people on there that can
give you some Solaris related information, although this at current is
slightly limited as most of the work is being done in Linux as it is
free.

Currently your friend is connecting to the Solaris machine using JFW and
a Windows application, I have though found it easier at times to install
Linux onto a desktop machine, get an SSH client up and running and then
SSH into the Solaris machine, as I get much better access through
Speakup. Although you can do this on an inexpensive machine,
unfortunately you will need to use a hardware synthesiser, which can be
expensive to obtain and sometimes difficult, as most companies now are
pushing the software synthesisers. There are software synthesisers
under Linux, but these don't work with Speakup, and I would suggest that
unless you have the system set up exactly correctly, you won't get far,
and you will find access times much slower.
Get back if you need more help,
Andrew.

Subject: A plea on behalf of a friend
Dear All,
I have a computer query that I would really appreciate some help with.
I might as well be up front, this is not for a student but a totally
blind friend of mine, in a work situation. He's been trying to resolve
this for nearly a year now and still hasn't got anywhere and is
receiving minimal support from his employers.
He is a computer programmer and needs to use Unix Solaris Version eight.
This is a totally new programme to him and he has managed to make JAWS
work with this system via Wintegrate. However, he wants to know:
1. Is there a better way of doing this?
2. Does anyone know where a totally blind person might go to get some
training on how to use Unix Solaris with JAWS, is there anyone that
could provide one to one training?
This really has got to desperation point, hence me e mailing this list,
I suspect the only reason that he hasn't been laid off is that a charity
organisation subsidises his wages.
Many thanks in anticipation.
