The Safe Harbor framework is a subset (broadly) of Binding Corporate Rules.
I have a paper on our site which expresses the differences. Now I can't
remember, but it may be behind our registration gateway. If so and you
prefer not to receive stuff from us please just unregister after you look at
it.
It's at http://www.marketingimprovement.com/hotnews/freestanding/bcr.html
There is a conference next week in Dublin which will address this in part,
too. The UKIC will be there, the Irish Commissioner and some US experts on
Safe Harbor. I'm not really pushing it, but I am planning to be speaking at
it. http://www.transatlantic-events.com/DPprogramme.html I know bookings
appear to have closed, but I also know there are a couple of places left and
you can quote my name and as for "Friends of the speaker" discount

Subject: [data-protection] Safe harbor / harbour
Does anyone know anything about the "safe harbor" framework which US "firms"
sign up to? Looking through the lists and "industry sectors" on the website
I can't see a single public organisation - does this mean that public
organisations e.g universities can't sign up to it, and hence none of them
are bound by data protection principles? I'm thinking about the possibility
of transferring personal data to recipients at other universities. It seems
odd that there is no obligation or option for public organisations to sign
up too.
