I have a partial answer to my own question. At least one person replied and
said "How do I reply to the whole list?" And it's caught all of us out a
few times when we've been in a hurry.
The answer, of course, is "Reply to All" and then probably delete the spare
entry for the originator coz s/he gets it twice then.
Someone else said that they'd posted once and been firmly slapped down in
the reply. Lordy, I hope that wasn't me! I advised them to slap back ;)
This is a talking shop. Obviously there is a tightrope to walk between
irrelevant and monstrous quantities of guff and real advice, AND we need to
be clear that the only attributable advice is paid for legal advice, but we
DO solve issues. And the more thoughts the better, unless they are all
"What she said, miss!" thoughts, of coursed!

Subject: [data-protection] This list. Who, what, when and why?
I think I've been reading from and contributing to this list, one way or
another, one role or another, for three, maybe four, years. And it struck
me today that we see contributions from the same people and very few
"unknown names".
That we all contribute doesn't mean we're right, of course. It just means
that we contribute. And I like it when people contribute, and I don't even
mind (too much!) being proven wrong by a "better expert". But a question
struck me:
"Of the up to 600 people on this list, perhaps 20 contribute regularly.
What do the rest get out of reading these contributions?"
Then I had another question:
"What stops the rest from contributing?"
It seems to me that we have a far greater expertise than just a few
loudmouths like me! How do we encourage the quieter member to speak? The
issue is I am really asking the quieter members, and I doubt they will
answer :(
