There is a requirement (as I think another post refers to) for students to complete 2,300 hours in practice. therefore it is necessary for HEIs and placement providers to share information during the students training. However, HEIs are required to sign off a certificate of good conduct which they should only do if they are satisfied that there are no issues around practice (including any occupational health issues)
There is no need for the HEI to provide sickness info to employers who should be carrying out their own pre-employment occupational health screening. The fact that an HEI has signed off a student, allowing them to register, should be adequate. Its a bit like saying you want to see the question and answer papers form their A levels rather than accept their final award. It however imperative that HEIs have appropriate quality and 'disciplinary' mechanisms in place so that they can pick up on those who do not meet the required standard

Subject: [data-protection] Nursing students' absence records
I have been consulted about seeking blanket consent at induction for the
release of a nursing student's absence and sickness records for potential
employers. (Specific reasons for absence would only be included if judged
to be relevant.) I am not happy since I feel that explicit consent needs
to be specific to the context. Do other HEIs have a policy with regards to
the release of absence details for nursing students?
One reason for determining policy for nursing students is that, during the
investigation into the Beverly Allit case, it was noted that she had a
significantly unusual pattern of sickness absence during her training
period, which was not passed on to those who employed her on qualifying.
Those responsible for her training were severely criticised since non-
disclosure placed patients at risk.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Regards
Ann
