Like Melanie, I too was on the HEFCE funded working party and
look forward to the appearance of its report. What became clear
was that, despite the length of time taken for its gestation, some
issues were too complex for it to deal with completely. Chris
Singleton was asked by the teacher members of the working party
to advise on whether (non-psychologist) tests that they could apply
would be adequate and what they might be.
Given the wide range of tests available and the variations in
reporting strategies and standards used by psychologists
themselves it is not surprising that the report had to limit itself to
using a phrase like "BPS standards" without saying precisely what
these were.
Several of us on the working party were convinced that the report
had to deal with issues that would have to be the objects of further
study (not by us but by suitably qualified specialist groups). The
matter of diagnosis, particularly for the post 18 sector, was an
outstanding example.
