Hi All
I am the Director of Pre-Registration Nursing courses in the
Department of Nursing at the University of Salford and have recently
received copies of a number of interesting EMails regarding the above
subject.
We have always supported students with dyslexia through their course
in what we considered appropriate ways. However since our move into
HE and the resulting easier access to Equalities and Learning
Resources Units, we are receiving 'assessment reports' on students
who have either self-referred or been referred by their Personal
Teacher. These reports are alarming to say the least. They indicate
that some students have varying degrees of different problems. The
most worrying was regarding a student undertaking the Child Branch
who has quite marked problems with 'transposition of maths';
inability to recognise some words; lack of concentration and so on.
This particular student was 'prescribed' £2,500 worth of IT hardware
and software to assist her through the course plus a further £2,400
worth of 'specific tuition. Student nurses do not have funding built
into their bursaries to allow for the purchase of assistance or
whatever to help them and as she had been referred by her PT, the
Department has funded the purchases on this occasion whilst at the
same time recognising that we cannot do this for all students who
might find themselves in this situation.
I have therefore been asked to write a policy which is to be taken to
the Faculty Executive for discussion.
If anyone can offer any advice or recognises my plight I would be
delighted to hear from them. The EMails I have seen were
from:Universities of Portsmouth, Middlesex.
