Before coming to work at Leeds Uni I used to be a shorthand writer in
the Crown Court. Again, this is a skilled job. You need to be able
to take shorthand at 250 words per minute to take verbatim notes of a
lecture - plus you need to understand the subject. It is a good
idea, but only for experts. I think it is more important to get
someone who knows the subject and ask them to take notes of the parts
they think important.
At Leeds University we are asking for volunteers from postgraduate
students to help disabled students, but it is interesting to hear
that other universities are prepared to pay postgraduates for their
help.
