It depends on what you are doing, and I am happy to be challenged on what I have written below...
If you are using a computer to mark, say, an online multiple choice paper and the pass mark is set by humans at 60%, then whilst the system is marking the papers and scoring and determining a pass or fail, it's not really automated decision making. It's working to a fixed template - the key being that human intervention would not change the outcome as there is no latitude in the decision made.
In financial services, when you apply for credit online the decision making is different. The system has parameters within which it needs to work, but subject to a potentially large number of variables - not every possible option pattern of which can be mapped - the system will decide that someone is a good or bad credit risk. The system, whilst having parameters, has been essentially left to make a decision based on available information and the risk profile of the business. Therefore, this is automated decision making.
Another example might be AI in an online shop that knows from previous data and other data, that you prefer red clothes and so suggests red variants of styles ahead of others, apart from when it thinks you are trying to match something blue in which case it might suggest black, for example because it has learnt that no one without colour blindness ever buys an outfit with two primary colours. Unless you are Michael Portillo. This is automated decision making.
Not sure any of that helps you!
Simon.

Subject: [data-protection] Automated Decision Making
Hi all,
Looking for some help with a query about automated decision making that we have been debating.
Does anyone working in the education/awarding body sector use objective tests that are marked by automated means? If so what is your view on whether this falls into the category of automated decision making in what you're approach to this is re. GDPR and the rights of data subjects related to this.
Thanks in advance.
