Hello,
The other thing you may want to consider is whether you need to replace the scanner or just the software that operates it - e.g. Texthelp controls most scanners through its own interface. Vuescan (http://www.hamrick.com/) also operates most scanners (not tested with AT) and Abbyfinereader (OCR software) does it too.
Best wishes,

Hi
Have you thought about one of the camera-type scanners that you put the book underneath - they tend to be easier to use for a wider range of students, with less risk of damage to the book. E.g. Hovercam t5VI - maybe others here have thoughts about that idea? Once thing that does come to mind is how easy it might be to go missing.

We have had a lot of trouble with one we purchased to do the job and which has ended up taking loads of time to scan, had problems with scanning and then having to convert to Claro Read. This has taken up hours and hours and hours of staff time.
