Some public figures may have been busy rewriting their histories waaaay prior to all this. e.g. If you Google "Councillor Mike Jones, Hitler", despite it making the front page of the Chester Chronicle, you'll find no reference to the time when the current leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council allegedly addressed a meeting of 100s of people, praising the Fuhrer's leadership qualities.
A call placed with journalist David Holmes (who wrote the 'offending' article) may or may not glean more information

Hi Andrew,
Just to throw my two pence worth in. I can see any number of campaign groups taking up the case where a significant politician or a leading CEO has links removed, there's just too many parties with vested interests in seeing those kinds of people remain accountable.
I do also think it would be a very bad move for any significant politician to try and exercise their Rtbf unless the linked article was in some way proven to be false and damaging (in which case libel laws are likely to come into effect?). Imagine the media uproar if it was found that Cameron and Boris tried to have those pictures of them at Eton(?) removed. "Cameron tries to hides his past!" etc etc etc.
Where the problem lies, I think, is in a grey area between those who have a 'legitimate' reason to have the links taken down and those who cannot (but would like to), have links removed regardless of the legitimacy e.g. the aforementioned politicians.
Take, for example, an old, negative press story about a small town councillor. They are unlikely to attract significant attention for any to pick up on their exercising their Rtbf and challenge that so who makes that call? Google won't care, it's too much trouble to drag it through the courts so they'll just remove the links. The public won't know and so will be denied an opportunity to make a full assessment of someone who will have power over them.
The real loser here seems to be the electorate and the public interest.
