I have often puzzled over this, and wondered if anyone has a definitive
answer.
The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (v2) says that the
three-digit security code on the back of the card must not be 'stored'.
Many organisations that provide paper order forms ask for the security code
on the form. Assuming that the data is immediately destroyed once the form
has been received and the payment has been taken, is this permissible under
the code or does if still count as 'storage'?
And if the general approach is permitted, how long would the form have to
sit around waiting to be processed before you could argue that the data is,
in fact, being 'stored'?
