Dear all,

I am wondering if there are any librarians who belong to this list who would be willing to speak about their policies and procedures concerning data protection at their libraries at the event below on Thursday 31st March between 2.30 and 3.15 as Colin Penman from UCL has unfortunately had to withdraw his offer of speaking.

Please can you let me know as soon as possible if you can do this. I realise that this is short notice.

Thanks very much

Vicky Robertson
Reader Services Librarian
School of Pharmacy Library

* With apologies for cross-posting *

Dear Colleagues,

Just to let you know that there are a few places still available on the cpd25 'Data Protection session for Library Staff' which is taking place on Thursday, 31st March 2011 from 1.30pm:

Data Protection For Library Staff [Event Ref. No. TG2/DP]

Who should attend?

This event is aimed at those with an interest in Data Protection, and those that deal with data protection as part of their roles at work.

What will the event cover?

The event will highlight the service that JISC Legal provides covering data protection, the legalities of data protection and also will include case studies from one or possibly two institutions concerning data protection policies and procedures.

Speakers:

Jason Miles-Campbell, Service Manager, JISC Legal, University of Strathclyde.

Jason joined JISC Legal in 2004 as the Service Manager. JISC Legal's role is to ensure that legal issues do not become a barrier to the development and adoption of new information and communication technologies in the UK further and higher education sectors. Jason's job is to efficiently allocate the Service's resources to the many demands on its expertise, to lead in terms of the Service's front line work, and to contribute to the development of its strategy.

Jason studied English Law and French Law at University College London in the dark and distant past. In 1994 he became a lecturer in law, specialising in European law, consumer law, and then IT law, and his ten years' experience in higher education included a stint as head of department. In 2004, he moved on to join JISC Legal, and has been assisting the further and higher education sectors in his current role since. In 2008, he added an LL.M. in IT and Telecoms Law from Strathclyde University to his qualifications.

Particular interests include copyright law (including the intricacies of open educational resources), access management legal issues, gadgets, travel, Girls Aloud, and haggis wontons (his culinary speciality).

Colin Penman, Records Manager, Data Protection and Freedom of Information Officer, University College London Records Office.

Colin is a records manager and archivist with experience in public and private sectors, and a specialist in privacy, data protection and freedom of information. He went to UCL from the British Library, though he has worked previously for the NHS.

Lynn Young, Corporate Archivist and Data Protection Manager, The British Library.

Lynn Young is a qualified archivist and records manager who, as Corporate Archivist and Data Protection Manager at the British Library, is responsible for advising the Library on all aspects of privacy and data protection.

Her previous experience includes information governance and compliance at the University of Surrey, and archives and records management at the V&A. Lynn currently chairs the Archives and Records Association's Legislation and Standards Committee.
