Hi Hilary,
I have recently left Teesside University, where we had a bespoke piece of software designed through Microsoft Dynamics. This is a box standard piece of software, which can be developed to fit your particular needs. I have to say it took an age for senior staff to develop it, but once done it was quite effective.
From an advisory point of view, I was suspicious that going paperless would make tasks longer, and in the long run just make things harder, but I have to say I and other adviser were proved wrong, and in actual fact, once we had got to grips with it, it was far easier and better than shuffling endless paper. Now that i am working for a college that is very much paper based, it i have to say i really do rather miss the E system.
Good luck with it though

Dear colleagues,
Here in Durham we are investigating a range of Computer Records
Management Systems, CRMS and I wondered if anyone could suggest a system
that works well. We are being encouraged to use TARGETconnect
http://targetconnect.net/home/ in line with the other support services
in the university but I am not convinced this is the most effective
system.
Student Relate

htm seems more suitable to our service but I would appreciate any views/
experience you may have with these or any other systems.
Kind regards
Hilary
